The cheese slicer was invented by a carpenter, Thor Bjørklund, from Lillehammer, Norway in 1927. He used a wood planer as a model for his invention, which became a success. A characteristic trait of the original cheese slicer is that the thickness of the slice can be regulated by the amount of pressure applied to the handle when slicing. By pushing the handle down, the flexible part of the cheese slicer bends and widens the opening where the blade is. The more pressure applied, the thicker the slice.
